Sugar Mountain
north carolina
Towering over the road to Banner Elk on the slope down into the
valley, stands the majestic Sugar Mountain, and in the valley to the left, the
village of Sugar
Mountain NC.
The Village of Sugar Mountain has been an incorporated Village
since 1989. The Village has about 50 businesses in its corporate limits. Within
the corporate limits you will also find casual to fine dining, shopping which
includes everything from antiques, fine clothing, jewelry, wine & cheese,
gifts, banking, real estate, photography and the only two Major Grocery stores
in the area.
Sugar Mountain is densely populated with vacation
homes, vacation home rentals, cabins, condos, and townhouses. At the top of
the easternmost ski slope, the 10 story Sugar Top Condominiums stand
guard over the valley, as if in defiance of mother nature, or as a tribute to
mans ingenuity - depending on how you look at things!
Like all good resorts, Sugar Mountain NC offers skiing in the winter, and golf
in the summer. Sugar adds snowboarding and tubing to the winter mix, and tennis
and mountain bike riding in the summer. Also in the summer they offer scenic
lift rides on the weekend, weather permitting.
Shopping wise, everything you need is right close to the entrance on 184, and
“ski shop row” is right there too, with at least
3 stores stocking all your ski and snowboarding equipment, attire, and accessories.

Golf and Tennis
Sugar Mountain's golf course is a public18 hole course designed by Duane Francis & Arnold Palmer, and built in 1964. It features rolling fairways that leave you with countless uneven lies, and the small greens are fast and difficult to read. Water hazards only come into play on a few holes, but there are plenty of sand bunkers spread throughout the course.
The Sugar Mountain NC Racquet Club consists of 6 fast-dry
clay court, sitting just below the ski lodge, at a mere 4000 feet! Tennis
lessons, clinics, and exhibitions are also available at the racquet club.
Once again, probably the best thing about playing golf and tennis on Sugar
– the weather!

Mountain Biking
Talk about making good use of the land, the ski slopes of the winter turn into mountain bike trails in the summer! The mountain bike trail system is a diverse and challenging route that winds throughout the entire mountain side.
For those of you who only want to cycle downhill, on the weekends the lift operators will throw your bike onto the back of your chair, and off you go!
Showdown at Sugar is a 3 day mountain bike competition
and festival that attracts serious mountain bikers from all over the eastern
U.S., for both its downhill and cross country events.
The good times always roll on Sugar Mountain NC!
Sugar Mountain Ski Resort
A premier North Carolina ski resort, Sugar, with its 1,200 vertical, is considered to be the largest ski area in North Carolina, with 20 trails serviced by 8 lifts over a 115 acre area. A well rounded mixture of terrain, 40% of the trails are novice, 40% intermediate, and 20% expert, (which are scary to all but the truly hardened), makes Ski Sugar an excellent place for family fun on the slopes.
Snowboarding is allowed on all slopes, but one terrain park designed just for snowboarders includes a fun box, spine, rail slide, quarter pipe, and a tabletop, and is services by a brand new lift.
Sugar also has a 700’ Tubing park with 2 lifts and lights for night tubing.
Sugar Mountains hosts its own ski and snowboard race team and has a ton of special programs and promotions, winter value packages, and special events.
After a hard day on the slopes, schuss into the lodge, chill out in front of the fireplace at the Last Run Lounge, and enjoy your favorite cold beverage or hot toddie!
Ski Sugar! It’s Swweeeettt!!!
Sugar Mountain NC has a major advantage of being the closest north carolina ski resort to Banner Elk. Sugar Mountain Resort is very popular among families and renters of slopeside condos and cabins, a lot due to the proximity of restaurants, shops and events that Banner Elk has to offer.
